Riverdale’s main street runs east and west between two significant north-south arterials that are slightly over 2 miles apart – Halstead on the west and Indiana on the east. As a consequence, Riverdale has a charming downtown without a great deal of through-traffic. While this makes for a small town feel, it is not good for retail trade.
Downtown Riverdale consists of a six block section along 144th Street – beginning two blocks west of the Metra/Illinois Central tracks and extending four blocks east of the tracks. The east side is considered to be the main downtown district.
The Ivanhoe stop over 144th Street has several elevated platforms accessible only from the west side of the tracks. The primary parking area is directly east of the tracks. Metra riders can walk to their cars without passing in front of a single retail shop.
The 22 photos, captured between April, 2001 and May, 2003, are arranged from an area just west of the tracks east along 144th Street.
